Would you like to participate in an investigational study for people who suffer from GERD (Acid Reflux or Heartburn)?

We're inviting you to take part in a study for adults who suffer from GERD to evaluate the effect of the investigational drug on treating the symptoms associated with GERD. All study-related visits, tests, care, and study drug will be provided at no cost. In addition, compensation for study-related travel may be provided. Health insurance is not required to participate.

The study will be evaluating the efficacy of an investigational study drug for GERD. Volunteers who qualify to take part in the study may receive compensation for time and travel expenses.

Participants may be eligible to take part in the GERD Studies if you:

  • Are over 18 years of age
  • You experience symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn after eating
  • You currently take a PPI reflux medication daily but still have heartburn or acid reflux symptoms often

All study-related care will be provided by a team of medical professionals.

VOLUNTEERS WHO QUALIFY TO TAKE PART IN THE STUDY MAY RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR STUDY-RELATED TRAVEL.

What happens if I Sign Up? We will match you to a research study location in your area that needs volunteers with GERD or notify you when one becomes available. The study team will then contact you and you may have the opportunity to participate if qualified.

If you think you might like to participate in the GERD Studies or would like more information, please enter your information below so we can confirm if you may qualify and can contact you about the study. Keep in mind that participation is entirely voluntary. If you do decide to take part in the study, you are free to change your mind about participating at any time.

About GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which acid from the stomach regurgitates or brings up the stomach contents into the esophagus (tube that connects the throat and stomach) or back of the throat. GERD encompasses other terms that people use to describe their symptoms, such as acid reflux or heartburn.1

It is estimated that around 25% of North Americans and Europeans have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).2 Risk factors for developing Acid Reflux include obesity, pregnancy, the consumption of certain foods or beverages, eating late at night, use of certain medications, and smoking.3

Symptoms of GERD can interfere with everyday life. These may include:

  • Burning pain in the chest that usually occurs after eating and worsens when lying down.
  • Belching or nausea
  • Acid Reflux or Regurgitation (which is a sensation of liquid or food coming back up into your throat (without vomiting))
  • Discomfort in the upper abdomen
  • Coughing after eating
  • Bitter taste or excess of saliva
  • Sore throat

Lifestyle changes may help to treat and manage GERD. Some changes include:

  • Weight loss
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit meal size
  • Decrease alcohol intake
  • In severe and medication intolerant cases, surgery may be recommended.

The GERD Studies are evaluating an investigational medication to learn if it may help prevent heartburn or reflux symptoms when taken along with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Clinical Research Study?

A Clinical Research Study (also called a clinical trial) is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational drug – these may include how well an investigational study drug works for a certain condition. All medications must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved and prescribed to patients.

Participation in the GERD Studies will involve visits to a study clinic near your home.

Those who qualify will receive either the investigational drug or a placebo, as well as all call and study-related medical exams and laboratory tests, all at no cost. Compensation for travel may also be available.

In the GERD Studies, participants will be randomly assigned to a study group. You will receive either the investigational drug or a placebo, depending on the assigned study group. Neither you nor the study team will know which study group you are in, but in the case of an emergency, the study doctor can quickly find out.

Volunteers who qualify to take part in the study may receive compensation for study-related travel. Please discuss this with the study team when they contact you.

There is no cost to participate in the GERD Studies. If you qualify, all study-related visits, tests, care, and study drug will be provided at no cost.

If you decide to take part, you will receive study-related care throughout the study from a team of experienced doctors and nurses.

The research team will be able to explain more about what the GERD Studies will involve, and it is up to you to decide if you want to take part. Participation in this study is voluntary. Whether or not you decide to participate in this study will not affect your current or future relationships with your doctors. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting those relationships or the care you receive.

We match you to a study clinic within a close travel distance from your home. If we are not running the study in your area currently, with your permission, we will keep you in our database and reach out once a study clinic in your area becomes available. If, at any time, you decide you no longer want to participate in the study, you can opt out and we will delete your information.

About the GERD Studies
